Spring is in the air and it's just about the time that the beautiful dogwoods come in bloom in Kentucky! The American Quilters Association (AQS) puts on an amazing quilt show in Paducah, Kentucky, Quilt Capital of the World! The number of quilts on display is overwhelming and inspirationally unmatched. The festival hosts hundreds of hand-crafted and machine-crafted quilts, the Merchant's Mall, fashion show, workshops and more. We'll spend a full day and a half at the show which is held at the National Quilt Museum in historic downtown Paducah. Another wonderful addition to this tour include two nights in Shipshewana, Indiana (Amish Country). We've included a dinner with an Amish Family on the farm and we'll enjoy an Amish Backroads tour with our friend, Kenny. We've also included a love story musical at the Bluegate Theater called, The Confession, a NY Times Best Seller based on the novel by Beverly Lewis. The Patchwork Quilt Tour - April 25-May 1, 2017
Day 1: Tuesday, April 25
We'll begin our journey this morning with early morning departures from both Northeast and Central Minnesota. We'll all blend together in Eau Clair, Wisconsin after our lunch break. Just set your seats back and relax as we travel along. You’ll find the day will go by quickly as you enjoy the company of fellow travelers aboard. Stops will be made about every 2 ½ to 3 hours. We’ll arrive to Peru, Illinois in the early evening about 7 pm. Often we'll make a quick dinner stop before checking if it looks as though traffic congestion plays a part in our ETA. Our lodging is the lovely Fairfield Inn and Suites. The evening is at your leisure.
Day 2: Wednesday, April 26
After an early breakfast, we'll begin our travel day around 7 am. We'll make comfort stop in Effingham, Il for a break with an estimated arrival around lunch time to Paducah's National Quilt Museum. We'll get everyone checked in so that you can begin enjoying the American Quilter's Society Festival. Be on the look out for those refreshing dogwood, cherry blossoms and other spring blooms .... Natures "Patchwork Quilt" ! After the festival closes (6 pm) we'll board the coach and take you to Patty's 1880's Establishment for a delightful sit-down dinner. You'll select from grilled chicken, 1 inch pork chop or fried catfish. We'll travel to Marion, IL (about 45 minutes away) with an estimated arrival to our hotel around 9 pm. We are staying at the Best Western Plus. (2 nights).
Day 3: Thursday, April 27
Breakfast is served as early as 6 am. We'll begin our day around 8:15 am so that we can arrive to the AQS Festival by 9 am. This way if anyone has a workshop set up, they'll get there in time for it. Keep in mind once we arrive to the festival for a "full day" of quilting extravaganza.... you are only a block from the downtown historic area of Paducah. Paducah is a beautiful river city with fabulous shopping, antiques, fabric stores and restaurants. Tonight after the quilt show closes (at 6 pm) we'll bring you Hancocks of Paducah so that you can do a bit of shopping. They are staying open late tonight just during the quilt show and we can't miss bringing you there. It's an ICON in Paducah. Afterwards, we'll arrive to the hotel around 9:00 pm.
Day 4: Friday, April 28
Breakfast is served as early as 6 am. We'll begin our day around 7:30 and travel to Shipshewana, Indiana. We'll visit the Amish town of Arthur, Illinois with lunch (paying on own) at Yoder's Kitchen Restaurant. They also boast great shopping, bakeries and quilting. After lunch, we'll continue to Shipshewana with a late afternoon arrival. Once we get checked into the Bluegate Inn, we'll wind our way over to Topeka, Indiana where we've included a delicious family-style Amish meal at Tiffany's Restaurant. Tonight we'll return to the hotel around 7:30 pm.
Day 5: Saturday, April 29
Breakfast is served this morning at the Bluegate Inn. We'll begin our day around 8:30 am. Today is filled with many wonderful attractions beginning a visit to the Menno-Hof Museum. This museum will enlighten you with Amish and Mennonite history and the persecution they endured. Get ready for a family-style in-home Amish lunch this afternoon served with two meats and the homemade pie you'll eat anywhere! After our lunch, we'll enjoy reserved seats at the Bluegate Theater for "The Confession" a love story and "keep-you-on-the-edge of your seat mystery ... based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Beverly Lewis. After the show, hop aboard our motor coach with a step-on-guide who'll bring to life the people and their way of life on an Amish Backroads Tour. Our tour will end at his family's Amish farm where we'll enjoy dinner with the family.
Day 6: Sunday, April 30
After breakfast this morning, we'll begin winding our way through the lovely state of Indiana traveling around Lake Michigan to Shawano, Wisconsin. This is huge quilt territory, so be on the look out for Barn Quilts along our way. We'll arrive to the Super Eight Motel in late afternoon.
Day 7: Saturday, May 1
After breakfast this morning, we'll begin our journey homeward. I hope you've left a little extra space in your luggage for all wonderful memories you've made! Stops will be made as the day moves along with an expected arrival to 1:00 pm to Eau Clair. Here is where we'll say good-bye after our lunch break. Our central MN folks will travel on the Trobec shuttle and the Northeast folks will continue headed northwest home.
Deposits/ Final Payments: $100 per person deposit due with registration. This becomes non-refundable March 1, 2017.
Final payments are due on March 15, 2017. Final documents will arrive three weeks prior to departure. No refunds after March 25, 2017.
Registration: Reservations are taken on a first-come, first-serve basis. No seat is considered solid without a deposit paid. Happy Trails Tours accepts money orders, personal checks or cash and credit cards..
Cancellations: Monies returned between March 1 and March 25, 2017 are contingent to what Happy Trails receives back from hotels, charters, tour companies, restaurants and festival organizations.
How to Pack: The tour is completely casual and comfortable. This tour will require a good amount of walking, however, there are lots of places where folks can sit and relax. Other long days, it is not a hard paced tour at all.
Travel Insurance: Travel insurance can be purchases separately by Travel Guard International. It can offer financial security and peace of mind in case of last minute cancellations or trip interruptions. Pre existing conditions are waived when purchased within 12 days of your initial deposit.
Changes: Happy Trails reserves the right to adjust this schedule for the benefit of all traveling. We have no control over hotels, charters, attractions or restaurants. If we have to make a change, we’ll replace it with something of equal value or more. Thank you for your understanding.
