Adding to the tone of this Old West tour, we'll be guests at the Historic Franklin Hotel in Deadwood for three nights! Grab your cowboy hat & your boots! Deposits and Final Payment Due Date: $125 per person deposit is due with each reservation. The deposit becomes non-refundable with cancelations after June 1, 2022. Final balance is due: July 1, 2022.
Final Documents: Final documents are expected to arrive in mid-August with specifics on boarding location and hour.
Cancellations: Money returned with cancellations between July 1 and August 1st are contingent upon what Happy Trails Tours can retrieve back from hotels, charters, theaters, restaurants, etc. No refunds with cancellations made after August 1, 2022.
Travel Insurance: Travel insurance is available to help defray monies lost due to illness, family emergencies, acts of war, etc. at an additional charge. It can offer peace of mind and financial security. Call our office for further information.

Day 1: Wednesday-Sept 7th Travel Day to Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Board the beautiful Trobec Motor Coach at locations throughout Minnesota with exact specifics yet to be announced. We'll begin with boarding in Grand Rapids, Iron Range Cities and south to the Duluth and Hinckley area and St Cloud area. Other stops may be added once we see where everyone is from. We wind our way southwest along Hwy 23 - stopping in St Cloud for lunch (also a boarding site). We'll continue to Sioux Falls with an estimated arrival around 6:00 pm. Just set your seats back and relax as we travel along. You’ll find the day will go by quickly as you enjoy the company of fellow travelers aboard. We’ll stop every 2 ½ to 3 hours for breaks. All meals, on own today.
Day 2: Thursday, Sept 8th Badlands National Park, Wall Drug, Deadwood & Trail of Jack McCall
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before we depart for the Black Hills.
We’ll leave about 7:30 am. A mid-morning stop will made along the way. Late morning brings us to the Badlands National Park - Where we'll enter the 244,000 acre famous for its deep gorges and sharp lunar-like spires. Keep your eyes open for prairie dogs, big horn sheep & buffalo. Once we drive around the Hwy 240 "Badlands Loop", we'll come to Wall, home to the Internationally famous Wall Drug Store. This is where we'll get our lunch, today and maybe even a few souvenirs and coffee for 25 cents.
5:00 pm- Estimated arrival to our hotel –Franklin Historic Hotel and Gaming Complex /Silverado Casino. Built in 1903, the fabled Franklin Hotel has housed many famous guests in its time, including John Wayne, Teddy Roosevelt, and Kevin Costner. Its intricate Victorian styling can be seen from the newly renovated convention facility and the lobby on the main floor to the veranda above the white-columned hotel entrance, which affords guests a spectacular view down Deadwoods historic Main Street. This property has really gone through some amazing remodeling and it’s a real icon in Deadwood. The rooms are beautiful...it's where the celebrities stay when they come to town. The hotel does have an elevator and wonderful restaurant. Deadwood will be our home for the next three nights. Enjoy. Oh...at 7:30 pm tonight, you can step outside your hotel and catch the "Trial of Jack McCall". This trial is loads of fun and gives you some historical perspective regarding the man who shot and killed Bill Hickok on the night of August 2, 1876. Breakfast & Buffet Dinner at the hotel is included today.
NOTE: Our rooms blocked are a mixsure of queens/with one twin; double queens; variety that overlook the Main Street, Side Streets and city.
Day 3: Friday, Sept 9th Mount Rushmore and Mount Moriah Cemetery “Boot Hill”, Custer State Park
Breakfast is served at the hotel.
After breakfast, board a private bus for a one-hour tour that will take us to Mount Moriah Cemetery in Deadwood to include a narrated guided tour. Mount Moriah Cemetery, located high above Deadwood, certainly qualifies as a "Boot Hill." With notorious Wild West legends like Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Seth Bullock laid to rest under it's serene and peaceful forest, Mount Moriah is a beloved local and tourist stop. After our tour and lunch, we’ll wind our way to Custer State Park. This scenic drive, also known as Iron Mountain Road, curves and winds it way to the Wildlife Loop where it's not uncommon to see buffalo, deer, antelope, big horn sheep and more. The early evening holds in store Mount Rushmore at night. We will arrive early enough to explore its beauty during the daylight but then come evening, prepare yourself to be “Wowed” with the spectacular Lazer Light Show.
Day 4: Saturday, Sept 10th 1880’s Steam Engine Train, Crazy Horse, Fort Hayes Chuckwagon/Dances with Wolves
After a full hot breakfast, we’ll travel to Hill City train depot and board the 1880’s Steam Powered Train for a two-hour excursion through the Black Hills. This relaxing, scenic ride transports you between Hill City and Keystone in fully refurbished train cars. This historical steam train experience is narrated with on-board hosts pointing out sights of interest along the way. You will be able to get lunch here and may bring it on the train if you would like. Our next stop will be Crazy Horse Visitors Center, just a short distance away. This is home to the 5th granite face has emerged in the Black Hills. This is the face of Lakota leader "Crazy Horse". The visitor's center also houses the beautiful Indian Museum of North America. With this being a Saturday, there will be events and demonstrations throughout the grounds. Next: Our evening will include a visit to the Dances With Wolves Film Set. Walk along the boardwalk and experience the movie set and the Wild West! Next...a toe-tapping - hand-clappin' good time at the Fort Hayes Chuckwagon and Country Show.
Day 5: Sunday, Sept 11th Travel to Watertown, South Dakota
Enjoy a full hot breakfast at the hotel. We'll say good-bye to the Black Hills and make our 360 miles journey to Watertown, SD, where we'll spend our 5th night. We'll arrive to Watertown about 5:30 pm and check into our beautiful accommodations. Dinner on own, tonight.
Day 6: Monday, Sept 12th Homeward Bound
An included, full hot breakfast is served at hotel. We will begin our journey homeward with stops along the way~ Our expected arrival hour home is as follows; 2:45 pm St Cloud; 6:00 pm- Hinckley;7:30 pm – Duluth; 8:00- Eveleth; 8:15 pm- Virginia; 9;45 pm-Hibbing; 10:30 pm to Grand Rapids.
Changes: We reserve the right to adjust this schedule for the benefit of all traveling. If a change of hotel, restaurant or an attraction occurs, we’ll replace it with one of equal value or better. As always… we’ll inform you of any changes as we learn of them.
