Day 1: Monday, June 11th - Travel to Michigan's Upper Peninsula to Manistique, Michigan - 350 Miles from Duluth
Early morning boarding begins in Grand Rapids, Hibbing, Chisholm, Virginia, Eveleth and Duluth and Superior.
Settle back and leave the driving and tour arrangements to Happy Trails Tours and Trobec Bus Company! After a long winter and spring, a beautiful summer driver through upper portion of Michigan can be quite refreshing! Our journey will include mostly two-lane highways as we travel east along highway #2 to Manistique. The times listed below are only estimates. We'll make a morning comfort stop before lunch. We'll make comfort stops along the way. We'll be moving into the Eastern Time Zone just before Escanaba. We'll continue along Highway 2 along the shoreline of Lake Superior on our way to Manistique.Tonight we'll settle into our lovely hotel in Manistique, Michigan. The evening is yours to enjoy as per your own agenda.
Day 2: Tuesday, June 11th - Ferry to Mackinaw Island ~ Lilacs ~ Horse-Drawn Carriage Tour ~ Grand Hotel
We'll depart after breakfast with a short drive to Mackinaw City, Michigan. Here we'll cross the unbelievable Mackinac Bridge linking Michigan's peninsulas. We'll board the ferry that will take us on our 30-40 minute ferry ride to Mackinac Island. Once we arrive to the island, we'll have a couple of hours to explore as per our own agenda and have lunch at one of the quaint restaurants along our way. What a beautiful time of year to visit Mackinac Island during the Lilac Festival. Celebrating Mackinac’s lilac collection began in 1949 and brings thousands of visitors annually. What began as a one day event called the Mackinac Island Lilac Day has blossomed into a ten day festival. In the mid-afternoon, we'll board a Horse Drawn Carriage for a history tour of the island. Once our tour is complete, the carriage will bring us to the glorious Grand Hotel! We'll begin the check-in process (around 4 pm) and settle in for the next two nights at the Grand Hotel. Our evening Dinner is included in your package and consists of a 5-course dinner served with the elegance that only the Grand Hotel can do! Please note that folks must be in formal attire in the dining room. Gents need a coat & tie…ladies will want to wear dresses (long or short) or dressy slack outfits.
Day 3: Wednesday, June 12th Free Day on Mackinaw Island ~ Lilac Festival, Rose Gardens ~ Day at Leisure
A fabulous full American breakfast is yours to enjoy as per your personal schedule dictates. The rest of the day may be enjoyed however you wish to spend it. The gardens on the property are amazing! The hotel also offers a variety of nice activities throughout the day…but the main activity at the Grand Hotel is relaxing. You may wish to walk downtown (or take a horse-drawn taxi) to explore the many little village shops, historic landmarks, and more. They have a wonderful afternoon tea or you can just go to the lobby area, find a place to sit and listen to the harpist play. Enjoy another lovely 5-course dinner tonight, included. Day 4: Thursday, June 13th Travel to Bayfield, Wisconsin ~ Historic Rittenhouse Inn and Shores of Lake Superior
After an early breakfast early, we'll be taking the first ferry to the mainland to begin our journey homeward. We'll take our last horse-drawn taxi ride to the boat dock where we'll catch the ferry - this time to St Ignace, Michigan. Once we arrive to St Ignace, we'll travel to Bayfield, Wisconsin. Set your seats back and relax. A lunch break and comfort stop will be made as the day goes along. We'll move back to Central Time and gain our hour back today. We'll arrive to Bayfield to our lovely hotel property on the shore of Lake Superior around 6:30 pm with dinner to follow at the lovely historic Rittenhouse Inn.
Friday, Day 5, June 14th The Apostle Islands Grand Circle Tour on Lake Superior
Breakfast is served before we begin another wonderful day in Bayfield. Once checked out, we'll travel a short distance to the boat dock to board the "Apostle Islands Cruises" for a Grand Tour of the Islands. We'll sail past 22 islands in all with views of Raspberry Island, Devils Island Lighthouse and the sea caves. The tour is about 3 hours and very scenic! Once our tour concludes, we take the afternoon to explore the beautiful downtown area of Bayfield before we start traveling home. We'll arrive home in the early evening to Duluth around 5 pm; Virginia and Eveleth around 7:00-7:30; Hibbing and Grand Rapids between 8:00 - 9 pm; Our friends from Central Minnesota will meet their transfer in Superior, WI. Estimate: 8:00 pm- Little Falls ; 8:30 pm- Sartell.
