Day 1: Meet your Happy Trails hosts, Lynnie Aro and her musical entertaining husband, Casey as you embark on your back roads adventure. Today is a travel day with early morning boarding beginning in northeastern Minnesota, continuing on through the Twin cities. A motor coach shuttle will also bring folks from the central part of the state to join up with the main coach along the way. Stops will be made as the day goes along. Our first activity on this old barn tour is Seed Saver's of America in Decorah, IA. Seed Saver's is dedicated to saving and sharing heirloom seeds. You'll stroll along the heritage garden rich in heritage with thousands of samples of rare garden seeds, visit an historic apple orchard and see Ancient White Park Cattle. We'll give you a chance to pick up some seeds before saying leaving this place. Late in the afternoon, we'll settle in for the night in Decorah, Iowa with the rest of the evening to spend as per your own agenda.
Day 2: We'll enjoy a nice breakfast this morning before beginning our "back roads" tour through out several counties in Iowa. There are many neat old barns on the National Registry of Historic Places and connected to the Iowa Barn Association. Our day will include a local step-on historian as we discover the back roads of several counties between Decorah and Cedar Rapids. Prepare for a fun day to see lots of neat old barns, farms and maybe even a few tractors and vegetable gardens. Dinner is included tonight after we get checked into our hotel in Cedar Rapids. Note: Casey will tune up his banjo (or his guitar) and will entertain with songs and stories....(trust me, they are likely ones you know and even a few you don't!) Casey has performed at the Midwest Country Show, which has run on the RFDT TV stations and performed in Branson, MO so maybe you already know of him, his delightful stories and songs.
Day 3: Another nice breakfast is included before we begin 60 mile journey east to Moline, Illinois. Our day will begin with a visit to the John Deere Pavilion where we'll see one of the world's most comprehensive agricultural exhibits. Interactive exhibits mingle with actual John Deere equipment, creating hands-on, climb-on experiences for all ages. After lunch, we'll make our way to the John Deere Factory for a 1-1/2 hour tour. You'll watch , first-hand, how they put a tractor together at the Factory Tour. If children are attending this tour - they must be 13 years of age or older to attend this activity. But don't worry, we'll offer free time where folks can do a bit of shopping and browsing IF the factory tour isn't something you'll be able to do). After the tour, we'll check into our hotel in Bettendorf - with time to rest a bit before our evening activities. Dinner is included tonight at the Machine Shed and then we're off to the Play Crafters Theater. This theater is in the original dairy barn, built in 1914, and belonged to the Deere Experimental Farm. The show we'll see is called, "Moving" - an endearing family tale full of hope and humor. After the show, we'll travel to the hotel and settle in for a well deserved night's rest.
Day 4: Breakfast awaits and we're off - only this time to Portage, Wisconsin - near the Wisconsin Dells. Our travels take us south east into Wisconsin with our first stop at the Nelson's Dairy Farm. You'll love the Scandinavian welcome that includes lunch and a tour of dairy barn, gardens and more. We may even watch Mrs Nelson make some homemade bread. In the late afternoon, we'll continue our journey to Portage, Wisconsin, where our hotel is. We'll get checked in, relax and freshen up a bit before our last fun event. We'll enjoy dinner and show together at the Wisconsin Opry where you'll eat a delicious meal and listen to some great toe-tapping country music. Oh, I almost forgot to mention...we'll take an old fashioned hay ride, too.
Day 5: A good breakfast is served in the hotel before we depart for home. One last fun stop for folks...the Eau Galle Cheese Factory in Durand, Wisconsin. You'll love this place- not only will you see them make cheese but you'll also get to try a few samples. We'll travel home along 94 through the twin cities - meeting our shuttle coach in the late afternoon for our friends from St Cloud, St Stephen, Little Falls and Brainerd. The coach will continue north homeward to the Duluth / Superior area and the Iron Range. Expected arrival home is in the early evening with fond memories for all~ |
