If we have not met our minimum number of 10 people / 5 rooms, we’ll cancel the tour at that time. Travel Protection Insurance: Travel protection insurance is HIGHLY recommended. All payments are non-refundable on this tour. Insurance not only offers financial security but also peace of mind. Travel protection insurance also covers loss due to weather related causes. November in Churchill can be “iffy” which is why November is the ideal time to see the Polar Bears! Keep in mind, tours are subject to weather conditions so again…we cannot stress the importance of insurance. |
Day 1: November 10th - Early morning boarding in Duluth, Iron Range and Grand Rapids. Specifics on boarding (as to time and place) will be announced later. Typically we pick up at Duluth Perkins, Miller Hill Mall; Eveleth Super Eight; Virginia Village Inn; Grand Rapids Rainbow Inn Lower Lot. This day is dedicated to traveling to Winnipeg with overnight lodging at the BW Charterhouse Inn downtown. (Nice place - full service property). (All meals are on your own today)
Day 2: November 11th - Early morning boarding for our shuttle ride to the Winnipeg Airport. We’ll fly on Calm Air directly to Churchill. Time and flight numbers to be announced. Upon our arrival to Churchill, the hotel will pick us up from the airport and bring us to the hotel. Our lodging for the next three nights is the Lazy Bear Lodge. (www.lazybearlodge.com). A cultural and heritage tour will take you to historic Cape Merry, where the Churchill River spills into the bay, and several sites and short hikes along the coastline. You will visit the polar bear jail where polar bears who get too close to town are kept before their release. Dinner is included tonight at the Lazy Bear. Folks may select off a limited menu. Cape Merry: Named after the 1712-1718 Deputy Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, John Merry, Cape Merry is bounded by the Churchill River and the Hudson Bay. It has a wealth of history and natural beauty you won't want to miss. Polar Bear Jail: One way the citizens of Churchill care for their polar bear friends is to actually put them in "jail." When someone spots a polar bear too close to town, they call a special phone number, and the bear is humanely trapped and placed in the Polar Bear Jail until it can be safely transported back to the wild. You'll see the jail firsthand and learn about its amazing history as part of the tour. (Breakfast and Dinner included today)
Day 3: November 12th and Day 4: November 13th - Breakfast is included this morning at the lodge. Spend two full days on the tundra in search of the majestic polar bear. Each day you’ll explore more of the Hudson Bay coastline with a driver/guide who will lead you through our wildlife viewing area in search of arctic fox, arctic hare, camouflaged ptarmigan and, if you are lucky, the snowy owl and the gyrfalcon. One day will be spent on the comfortable Great White Bear Tours tundra bus with the other on our more nimble Lazy Bear Lodge wildlife viewing bus. Both vehicles are equipped with a propane furnace, bathroom facility, and a rear viewing deck so you can safely stand outside while photographing. Although we can accommodate as many as 40 on our tundra vehicle, we limit our group sizes to a maximum of 30 for your comfort and convenience. (Bring ample batteries for your camera & charger) One of your days on the tundra vehicle, you may travel just below the tree line in the boreal forest. On tundra viewing days we depart from the lodge at 8:00 a.m. A hearty lunch, hot drinks and snacks are included. (2 Breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners)
Day 5: November 14th - Enjoy your breakfast this morning before being shuttled to the airport for your flight back to Winnipeg on Calm Air. Time and flight numbers are yet to be announced. Upon landing in Winnipeg, our motor coach will be there to pick us up and shuttle us to our hotel, the BW Charterhouse Inn. The rest of your day can be spent at your leisure. If we get in early, you are right downtown within walking distance of some great shopping! (Breakfast included)
Day 6: November 15th - Breakfast this morning is included - with a morning departure for home. Sit your seats back and relax as our driver brings us back home to Minnesota. This day is dedicated to travel with stops made as needed for meals and rest-stops. Winnipeg is 6 ½ hours driving time to Grand Rapids - not counting any stops, road conditions, or other delays. Estimated arrival to Grand Rapids is 6:30 pm; Hibbing is 7:15 pm ; Virginia is 7:45 pm; Eveleth is 8:15 pm; Duluth is 9:15 pm. (Breakfast included)
Why NOT the TRAIN to CHURCHILL: We gave much thought to taking the train and decided against it for several reasons. First of all…it’s schedule is NOT predictable - we cannot guarantee that it will run on time. We’ve heard of groups who have lost a lot of their touring time in Churchill because of a late train. Also… they are in the process of laying new track, but when it will be completed is not determined. Again…to wait for this information will only lose time in securing our tour (Fall of 2009) at the Lazy Bear Lodge to see the polar bears. It’s too risky, and not a risk we are willing to take at this time. We also entertained the idea of bringing you home by train (only flying in one way) but then another thought occurred. We are keeping our bus and driver in Winnipeg while we are gone to Churchill because it‘s more financially sensible rather than sending the bus back home and then return to Winnipeg to get us! Now if that train is late coming in…we may end up spending another night in Winnipeg - which in the end costs us more money! We’re sorry to disappoint those of you who wanted to ride the train, but you can see why we decided against it.
Changes: We reserve the right to adjust this schedule for the benefit of all traveling. If a change of hotel, restaurant or an attraction occurs, we’ll replace it with one of equal value or better. As always… we’ll inform you of any changes as we learn of them. Remember weather can play a part on seeing the bears. The good news is that we have TWO full days out on the tundra!
