Day 1: Thursday, April 30th April 30 - May 9, 2009 Travel day to Normal, Illinois 529 Miles Early morning departures from various cities on the Iron Range, Grand Rapids and the Duluth area will be made. Exact time and location of boarding sites will be announced in late March or early April. This is a fun day … Where folks will recline their seats, get acquainted with fellow travelers and enjoy the scenery and each other’s company. Day 2: Friday, May 1st Travel to Renfro Valley, Kentucky 412 Miles We’ll depart after breakfast this morning for Renfro Valley. The scenery is beautiful as we travel through Kentucky to Renfro Valley in the Appalachian mountains. This is known as the Country Music Capitol of Kentucky. We’ll settle in to our hotel, which is right next door to the restaurant where we’ll have dinner and walking distance to the theater. Tonight’s show is the entitled “Tribute to the Legends”. Oftentimes on Friday nights, big name entertainers come to perform. Either way…the shows are wonderful and you won’t be disappointed. The show will conclude around 9 pm and another great show begins… “Country Classics”. If you’re still “awake” enough to enjoy more great music…stay. If not… our hotel is only a short walk from the theater. (Breakfast and Dinner) Day 3: Saturday, May 2nd Travel to Gatlinburg, Tennessee 165 Miles We’re already in the Appalachian mountains so we’ll just travel “over the mountain” and “round the bend” .. (a couple of times) to historic Gatlinburg, Tennessee. But first…we’ll take you to Applewood’s Barn Restaurant for lunch and then stop by our hotel to drop off the luggage and get our room keys. Then we’ll take you to Dollywood’s Theme Park in Pigeon Forge. There are many great theaters inside the park not to mention crafters, shops, rides … there are endless things to see and do here. We’ll stay until the park closes at 8 pm then travel to our hotel (15 minutes away) for a well-deserved night’s rest. (Breakfast) Day 4: Sunday, May 3rd Travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina 384 Miles A nice breakfast is served at the hotel before taking the entire morning until 12 pm at your leisure here in the historic district. They tell me lots of shops are open on Sundays in the mid-morning hour or if you prefer to just relax, you can. The morning is yours to spend as you wish. You’ll want to get lunch and breakfast here before we depart for the ocean. Our estimated arrival to Myrtle Beach will be around 7:30 pm… with a late dinner at the hotel, included tonight, after we arrive. We are right on the ocean… direct access to the beach. This property is lovely. It has an outdoor & indoor pool, hot tub, lounge, ice-cream shop and a bowling alley! It’s wonderful. The rooms overlook the ocean and have little kitchens in them with balcony’s that overlook the beach area. The bedrooms are also separated from the living room area… another nice feature. You’ll settle in very well, I’m sure. (Breakfast) Day 5: Monday, May 4th Myrtle Beach… The Carolina Opry and Benjamin’s Calabash Restaurant City Driving Enjoy the day at your leisure….until the mid-afternoon. Then we’ll take you for a ride along the “Grand Strand” so you get a feel of Myrtle Beach. Benjamin’s Calabash offers an unbelievable seafood buffet bar as well as other yummy foods. There’s something for every appetite and craving here! After dinner, we’ll take you to see Calvin Gilmore’s The Carolina Opry show, “Good Vibrations”. This should be an fabulous show with great variety music from the 60’s era. (Breakfast and Dinner) Day 6: Tuesday, May 5th Historic Charleston….The Magnolia Plantation and Gardens and Tall Ship Sunset Cruise We’ll get breakfast this morning early before traveling to Charleston - We‘ll be gone the entire day today - (Charleston is about 120 miles away - 2 hours). First, we’ll visit the Magnolia Plantation - a real deep south plantation experience listed on the Registry of Historic Places. This is about a two hour tour to include both the house and the gardens. Next: we’ll travel to historic King Street. We’ll take you to lunch, included, at “Magnolia’s” where you’ll dine is style with several entrées to pick from. After lunch… stroll the historic district for a couple of hours - just window shopping or doing the “real” thing! At 5:30, we’ll gather up and travel to the boat dock and jump aboard the Schooner Pride… a “tall ship” with some narration as we sail past historic sites and wildlife in the harbor. Passengers are even welcome to help raise and trim the sails! Watch the sun go down as you sail the “ocean blue” on the Atlantic’s harbor just off Charleston. We’ll get home around 10 pm this evening. (Breakfast & Lunch) Day 7: Wednesday, May 6th Myrtle Beach - The Alabama Theater, Dinner and Barefoot Landing City Driving Well another easy day today with time to relax on the beach or spend your morning and early afternoon as per your own agenda. Breakfast is served in the restaurant… help yourselves. In the mid-afternoon, we’ll travel to Barefoot Landing … A great place to stroll and explore located right on the water’s edge. Our restaurant, BT Bones is here (your choice of several entrées at the time of seating) and the Alabama Theater is located in the heart of this great tourist favorite. The show we’ll see tonight is called, “ONE” and it’s fabulous! After the show we’ll travel to our hotel for the night. (Breakfast and Dinner) Day 8: Thursday, May 7th Travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee 481 Miles We’ll have breakfast this morning before an early morning departure to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Just put your seats back and enjoy the scenery as we travel along. Stops will be made as the day goes along. We’ll arrive to Chattanooga in the late afternoon. You’ll thoroughly appreciate the atmosphere… especially if you are a train lover! The property where we are staying is located on the property of the historic Chattanooga Train Depot. Dinner is included tonight. (Breakfast and Dinner) Day 9: Friday, May 8th Travel to Normal, Illinois 563 Miles After our breakfast, it’s another early morning departure homeward. Again… stops will be made along the way as needed with an estimated arrival to Normal, Ill, in the late afternoon. Day 10: Saturday, May 9th Travel home! 529 Miles Enjoy breakfast this morning before beginning home! Stops will be made along the way as the day goes along. Estimated arrival home hours are as follows: Duluth area - 6:00 PM; Iron Range Cities - 7:30 - 8:30 PM ; Grand Rapids will arrive home around 9:30 PM. Click here for printable reservation form.
