Canada’s Culture Celebration.…. FOLKLORAMA! August 5-9, 2010

We’ll travel to Winnipeg this morning with convenient boarding in Duluth, Grand Rapids, Virginia, Eveleth and Hibbing. The exact direction that the bus will take will depend on the different boarding locations people sign up for. This will be announced in early July on your final documents. Folks from the Duluth area will be shuttled to meet the bus in Grand Rapids to save time. Arrive to the Charterhouse Hotel in downtown Winnipeg around 5:30 PM. (4 Nights) After getting checked in, we’ll freshen up for our evening dinner cruise on the Paddlewheel River Rouge (Paddlewheel Queen). Menu: to be announced

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, paying on own. This morning we’ll make a visit to the Museum of Man & Nature where you can travel billions of years of time and thousands of miles of geographic space in one building. We’ll plan to spend about 2 hours here (You’ll never see everything!) The afternoon is dedicated to your own agenda. Later in the afternoon we’ll attend the Folklorama Festival. We’ll enjoy a 3-course meal, 3 wonderful ethnic pavilions, music, dance, costumes and more. We’ll return to our hotel around 10:30 PM tonight. Specifics on which pavilions is yet to be announced.

Enjoy an EARLY morning breakfast, paying on own. Visit Oak Hammock Marsh for a Songbird Banding and Discovery Tour. They catch the songbirds in a net so that they can attach a bracelet to track their migration. There’s also a gift shop, small café and Interpretive Center, as well. The afternoon is yours to enjoy as per your own agenda. The location of the hotel is great since it’s walking distance to the downtown shops. Or…hop on board the bus and we’ll take you the McPhillips Street Station Casino for a bit of gaming! After our leisure afternoon, tonight our evening entertainment is dedicated to the Assiniboia Downs Race Track to include an all-you can- eat Saturday night buffet with the evening spent watching the races (or betting on your favorite horse!) After the race is done, we’ll select several people to go down to the race presentation ceremony where photos will be taken with the winning horse and jockey.

Enjoy breakfast this morning, paying on own, before boarding the coach for an Area City tour of Winnipeg (about 2 hours). Our city step-on-guide will tell us about the history and culture, with a drive by many important buildings and statues, including a visit to the Royal Canadian Mint. Next…we’ll visit the Forks Historical Market where specialty food vendors abound with fresh meat, seafoods, baked goods and bountiful produce. The dining experiences will be unique and fun. Shop for Folk Arts and contemporary crafts and street performers are in the market place, for your enjoyment. Again, time back at the hotel to freshen up will be made before boarding the coach for our 2nd evening of the Folklorama Festival. The evening dress is casual and comfortable. You may want to pack your dancing shoes just in case we get invited to participate in one of the dancing performances. We’ll return to our hotel around 10:30.

Enjoy breakfast, paying on own, before departing for home. Exact time of departure and estimated times home will be announced in late June. Lunch stops and coffee beaks will be made as needed. We’ll make a stop at the duty-free shop once we cross over the border. Estimated arrival home will be in the late afternoon / early evening - TBA.

This two week celebration brings over 500,000 visitors each year to Winnipeg. It started in 1970, where most of the pavilions were hosted in church basements and community halls. At that time, over 75,000 people came which created an annual celebration because of its overwhelming results! More than 20,000 volunteers extend their heartwarming hospitality year after year. Over 40 different countries are represented this year by food, costumes, dance and more and held in venues all over the city. We’ll depart on Saturday and Sunday evenings from our hotel at 5:30 PM and travel to the festival where we’ll enjoy 3 different ethnic pavilions (progressive-style) each night for appetizers, main course and dessert. Food, song and dance, exhibits and some shopping await us at each pavilion we visit. Dress is casual and comfortable. The festival committee will announce about 6 weeks out which pavilions we will explore. We will announce that to you in your final documents in late June.
